Collin County Sees (Unofficial) Uptick in Young Voter Registrations

Record numbers of voters are gearing up in Texas for next month’s general election, all of them pumped to speak their minds about who they want to lead the country and state. And while it’s hard to tell in Northeast Texas whether the tide of new voters is leaning red or blue -- both sides are enegrgized, remember -- Collin County elections administrator Bruce Sherbet says has seen at least one demographic stepping up -- younger adults. Commerce – Few details available in an accident over the weekend in Commerce that left as many as five people seriously injured. Two people were transported by helicopter to a Dallas hospital, and three others were taken to Presbyterian of Greenville in the accident that occurred off of Old Airport Road in Commerce.

Austin – Hunt County officials are gearing up for Hunt County Days in Austin this week. About 50 county leaders are scheduled to board a chartered bus and head down to Austin Tuesday morning to start 24 hours of meeting with Texas Legislators, workshops, and presenting issues aimed at improving Hunt County.

Commerce – The second annual Cowhill Chili Fest and BBQ Cook-Off is next weekend in downtown Commerce. The kick-off party is set to begin at 5:30 next Friday with live music from Bobby Coffman's Underground Band and Ace High. More music an entertainment is scheduled for Saturday, with all-you-can eat tasting opening up to the public at 11am for 7 dollars. Contact the City of Commerce at 903-886-1100 for more information.

Commerce – Commerce is looking for local acts to play at this year's Bois d'Arc Bash in September. The Bash brings thousands of people into Commerce each year, and will feature Texas country musician Sonny Burgess as this year's headline act. More acts are still being sought, however, to fill the Bash's two day lineup, and all kinds of music performances or even dance acts are encouraged. Wolfe City – Wolfe City is looking for volunteers to help with Wolfe City Clean Up Day this Saturday. The project is part of preparations for the city's annual homecoming set in May. Trucks, trailers, and manpower are needed as volunteers will start out from the City Barn around 8am Saturday. For more information call 903-496-2251.

Greenville – Greenville Police are still searching for one or more suspects in connection with a shooting in North Greenville. One victim was flown by helicopter to a Dallas hospital after being shot in the left bicep and the bullet traveling through the arm and lodging in the victim's chest. The incident occurred in the 2300 block of Wellington Street, a short distance away from Carver Elementary School.

Quinlan – There could be another Wal-Mart going up in Hunt County early 2007. A Wal-Mart Super Center is expected to go up in Quinlan on Highway 34 by February of 2007, according to the Tawakoni News. Quinlan City officials expressed excitement about the opportunity for a Wal-Mart, and the tax revenue it would generate. The store is expected to have more than 300 employees.
