GEUS also closely watching power demand


Greenville – Like the rest of the state, the Greenville Electric Utility System is seeing unprecedented demands for electricity during the current heat wave.

GEUS is reporting at least 121 megawatts used Wednesday afternoon as temperatures in Greenville hit 109 degrees. That bests the previous mark of 118 megawatts set in August 2010.

Last summer, officials installed the Tom Dart Energy Center, a 25 megawatt power plant designed to provide electricity during peak local demand.

Local serviceman receives accolades by Navy


– Aviation Machinist Mate Third Class Timothy Keith Lowery was bestowed the honor of the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal on June 15, surrounded by his family Tim and Carol Lowery, his parents and Brittney Lowery, his sister.

The medal was given to him for professional achievement as power plants collateral duty inspector, Strike Fighter Squadron 25 from December 2010 to June 2011.

Information sought into Morris' disappearance


Fannin County – The case of a Fannin County man who first went missing nearly two years ago remains under review.

The Texas Rangers and Fannin County Sheriff's officials are asking for the public's help regarding Jack Randal Morris. He was last seen near the community of Cotton Center.

Paris High Pre-Season Workouts Start Aug. 1


Paris, TX – New head coaches will welcome Paris High athletes back to school on Monday, Aug. 1, to start formal preparations for the 2011 football and volleyball seasons.

Students are reminded that they must have a current UIL physical on file before they are allowed to participate in workouts. This includes all incoming 9th and 11th graders. Contact Athletic Trainer Chad Helberg for more information.

More cities institute water conservation efforts


– The North Texas Municipal Water District, which serves more than 1.6 million people, initiated Stage 2 of its Water Conservation and Drought Contingency and Water Emergency Response Plan this week.

Residents in Hunt County served by the Caddo Basin Special Utility District and the Cash Water Supply Corporation come under the conservation measure.

The water district also serves residents in Collin, Kaufman and Rockwall counties, including the cities of Royse City, Fate and Terrell.

Hearing to decide commissioner's fate delayed


Van Zandt County – Van Zandt County Commissioner Ricky Laprade will remain in office for at least another month. A Monday hearing regarding the petition to remove him from office has been rescheduled to September 22.

Van Zandt County District Attorney Chris Martin agreed to the postponement because his office is scheduled to begin the murder trial of Johnson Burris.

TX Superintendent of the Year to be decided Oct. 1


– Richard Ogden, superintendent for Hughes Springs ISD in Cass County, is the Region 8 Superintendent of the Year.

He'll represent the region and compete with 18 other region superintendents for the 2011 Texas Superintendent of the Year Award, to be announced October 1. Region 8 serves 47 school districts in 11 Northeast Texas counties.

Ogden is joined by Royse City ISD Superintendent Randy Hancock, who is representing Region 10, which has 117 school districts in its nine county service area.
