Van Zandt County man ordered to federal prison


– A false statement to the Federal Aviation Administration lands a Wills Point man behind bars.

Darrell Glenn Reynolds pleaded guilty to the charge last summer for lying about the air worthiness of an aircraft. He's to serve five months in federal prison and was also fined $10,000.

Reynolds had incorporated and ran a non-profit organization, the Texas Fire Birds Volunteer Fire Department in Van Zandt County, which was used to provide aerial firefighting support.

EPA asks for more thorough pipeline study


– There's more concerns being raised against a proposed pipeline that would carry oil from Canada down through several Northeast and East Texas counties to the Gulf Coast.

The Environmental Protection Agency says despite two lengthy reports, the State Department still has not done sufficient analysis of the project's impact on the environment.

Small Area Plan put on display Tuesday


Greenville – A group of area residents got a glimpse Tuesday night of what the future may hold for an area west of Greenville.

One of the first ideas that consultants with Freese and Nichols feel should be implemented is the creation of an overlay zoning district along both the Interstate 30 corridor and the Monty Stratton Parkway.

Legislators fail to enact a statewide ban on salvia


– You can still legally buy salvia divinorum in Texas, if you know where to look. For the third time the legislature has failed to enact a statewide ban.

Opponents of salvia say smoking the substance can make someone more dangerous behind the wheel than a person who is legally drunk.

Local counties fare better in latest drought survey


– The latest report shows that we are now in the third worst drought in Texas history, behind only droughts in 1918 and 1956.

State Climatologist John Nielsen Gammon says we should prepare for brown lawns, because the water rationing is likely to reach historic levels.

Judge to determine trial dates for oil fraud suspects


Greenville – A court hearing is Wednesday for four remaining defendants in an alleged oil field fraud scheme.

Chad Hayes, of McKinney, was convicted and sentenced to prison last month on 17 counts, plus ordered to pay thousands in restitution. Prosecutors had claimed he was involved in a scheme to defraud people who invested in Fannin County oil wells, which were never drilled.

Funding sought to continue local mentor program


Fannin County – A Fannin County program that mentors children of incarcerated parents is in jeopardy of shutting down this fall due to federal budget cuts.

Building For Futures (BFF) would be eliminated unless they can obtain enough funding to partner with the non-profit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grayson County.

The Texas A&M University-Commerce Department of Social Work was awarded the Mentoring Children of Prisoners grant nearly two years ago.

Greenville, TX – To honor and remember our nation's military heroes, Audie Murphy Days will kick off Friday, June 24th. The annual two day event, which is free and open to the public, is hosted by the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum in conjunction with local military service organizations to celebrate Audie Leon Murphy, the most decorated soldier of World War II, as well as military veterans and those currently serving our country.

Hunt County – On Wednesday, June 29, Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Hunt and Rockwall Counties will sponsor a training that will allow private, non-commercial, and commercial applicators, with a license from the Texas Department of Agriculture to receive 5 hours of CEU's. Certified Crop Advisors will also receive 5 CEU hours.
