Big changes locally under redistricting proposal


– A proposed redistricting in Texas may pit several area representatives against each other.

A proposal released Wednesday by Burt Solomon, chairman of the House Redistricting Committee, includes but is not limited to, joining Hopkins County, currently under District 3, with House District 2.

Small plane crashes in rural Fannin County


Telephone – One person is injured following a small plane crashed Wednesday afternoon in Fannin County.

The plane, a single engine crop duster, wrecked out in a heavily wooded area near Telephone, according to authorities.

The pilot was treated for minor injuries at Red River Regional Hospital. There was no indication if the pilot was the only person on board.

The FAA is investigating.

Local fire crews called to assist in West Texas


– Several firefighters from the region have been deployed to assist in the wild fires out west.

Early Thursday morning, Commerce, Celeste, Frisco and Prosper firefighters set out for Ft. Davis, where they'll be assigned to a Texas Forest Service Strike Team and/or Task Force. The group is currently working to control the 160,000 acre Rockhouse Fire. Units will be assisting with fire control, back burning and hot spots. Commerce Firefighter's Jeremy Littlefield and Bruce Millard are among the personnel on hand.

Greenville man charged for possessing child porn


Greenville – Justin William West has pleaded not guilty to all five offenses. An interim hearing has been scheduled for April 27.

West was indicted by the Hunt County Grand Jury last month, four of the indictments were returned sealed pending the suspect's arrest and court appearance.

Five pornographic images of children were reportedly found on West's computer in June 2010.

Large scale theft ring trial set in Hunt County


Greenville – A September trial date is set for a Tarrant County woman, allegedly involved in an organized theft ring that targeted multiple Wal-Marts in the region.

Hillary Lynn Clark pleaded not guilty to the charges Monday.

Clark is one of three people, all from Arlington, who were arrested at the Commerce Wal-Mart following a reported theft in 2009.

Man dies at school after being electrocuted


Greenville – A contractor for Greenville High School is killed after being electrocuted while working in a crawl space.

22-year-old James Leo Banks, of Crowley, was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy has been ordered.

He was discovered by an official at the school and authorities were immediately dispatched.

Banks was employed by Lighting Technology, a sub-contractor for DMI, a company that has been doing work at the high school for the past several weeks.

Major leg of SSISD project nearly complete


Sulphur Springs – Work is coming along on the new Sulphur Springs Middle School, while the district's new Multipurpose facility is nearing completing.

The latest project update was presented to officials this week by Claycomb Associates Architects.

Local officials work to control animal population


Bonham – Fannin County officials are to conduct a series of town hall meetings beginning next month to receive input on the County's animal control issue.

Earlier this week, Commissioners determined four different locations to conduct the meetings, which will be open to the public.

On May 2 at 5:30 p.m., officials will meet in the county courtroom at the Fannin County Courthouse. That same evening, at 7:30 p.m., members of the commissioner's court will address individuals at the Honey Grove City Hall.

Greenville hopes to curb hotel occupancy rate


Greenville – The Greenville City Council has approved a list of new regulations for hotels, with hopes of bringing full-service facilities to town.

On a given night, about half of the City's 770 total hotel rooms are empty.

New rules approved Tuesday means any new hotel would be required to provide at least 55 square feet of meeting space per guest room, with at least 100 guest rooms for a full service hotel and 80 rooms for limited service hotels.

Each new hotel would also be required to have a swimming pool.
