More steps taken toward Greenville power plant


Greenville – The GEUS Board, the Greenville Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the City Council each met Tuesday and voted separately. The agreements will help paved the way for the estimated $100 million facility.

Meetings will continue for the next few months to line up air permits and financing for the plant.

Construction of Lufkin-based Greenville Energy LLC could employ up to 200 workers. It would take approximately 15 months to build. Once complete, the facility would employ approximately 56 workers.

A&M-Commerce, Grayson County College sign agreement


Commerce – Grayson County College (GCC) students can seamlessly transfer their Associate of Arts in Teaching credits into the Texas A&M University-Commerce Bachelor of Arts or Science Teacher Certification Program thanks to the signing of an articulation agreement on Tuesday at Grayson County College in Denison.

Record numbers set in first day of early voting


Greenville – Early voting for the November 2 General Election got off to a fast start in Hunt County.

A total of 639 ballots were cast both in person and by mail, passing previous marks set during the first day of early voting for this year's Primary Election and the 2006 General Election.

However, Monday's total was far short of the 1,514 ballots cast in Hunt County on the first day of early voting for the 2008 Presidential Election.

Two arrested for drugs following traffic stop


Commerce – Commerce Police have arrested two individuals for possession of drugs following a traffic stop along Hwy 24/50.

The Friday stop was initiated after 30-year-old Rowdy Dee Duvall was observed speeding. Duvall showed to have outstanding traffic warrants for his arrest out the Hunt County and Hopkins County Sheriff's Office.

After initial contact with the driver, a smell of marijuana was detected and later recovered.

Hopkins County considers road grant


Sulphur Springs – Hopkins County may be in line to receive $3 million in grant funding to assist in the repair of several roads damaged by heavy rains last year.

The application for the grant, which is administered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), must be submitted by the end of the month.

CHS student recognized for PSAT performance


Commerce – A Commerce High School student scores in the top five percent of Texas students on the PSAT.

Araceli Cabrera Zepeda was recognized during Monday's board meeting.

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills and writing skills.

Cabrera Zepeda was honored with a standing ovation by those in attendance, and given a certificate for her accomplishment.

Citizen shows concern over state school finance


Commerce – The Texas legislature stands to hear arguments this legislative session for a change in the current public school finance system.

More and more citizens continue to come forward, expressing their concern.

On Monday, Commerce resident Karen Maxwell addressed the school board, urging administrators and citizens to start a petition to inform our state senators and representatives of the need to revamp the system.

Student teacher charged with indecency with child


Greenville – A student teacher at Greenville High School is alleged to have engaged in a sexual relationship with an underage student.

37-year-old Christopher John Torti, of Commerce, was arrested on Oct. 13 and charged with indecency with a child. He's since been released after posting bond.
