Traffic being detoured on Loop 178 in Commerce


Commerce – East and westbound traffic along Culver Street/Loop 178 in Commerce was being detoured at as of 8 a.m., as officials attempted to remove a stalled charter bus.

According to Superintendent Blake Cooper, 4th grade students at A.C. Williams Elementary School were on their way to Austin for an annual trip when the bus driver took a curve too sharp and bottomed out.

No students were injured. They were loaded onto another bus and are en route to their destination.

University receives grant for mentoring program


Commerce – The Texas A&M University-Commerce social work department recently received a three-year, $484,000 grant for Project PRIDE (Promote Respect and Instill Discipline for Excellence), which will help implement a mentoring program with the Grayson County Department of Juvenile Services.

Laptops to be provided for PISD students


Paris – Juniors and seniors at Paris High School have received new laptop computers as part of a $500,000 Vision 20/20 grant.

The grant is funded through No Child Left Behind Enhancing Education through Technology.

Students will be allowed to use the laptop for home and school productivity, communication and presentations for school work.

Online resources will be made available to each student to support state curriculum and assess progress.

Outgoing Judge to work closely with successor


Sulphur Springs – Outgoing Hopkins County Judge Cletis Milsap has promised to work closely with his midterm opponent to ensure a smooth transition when Chris Brown takes office.

Brown will become the new chief executive after defeating the democratic incumbent Tuesday by a 59 to 41 percent margin.

Milsap has served 24 combined years as Judge and Justice of the Peace.

Arraignment hearing set for shooting suspect


Greenville – An arraignment hearing is set for Thursday for a suspect charged with shooting at a Greenville police officer.

Francisco Javier Davilla faces four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant. He's also facing a charge for allegedly firing on a Greenville residence that same day in which a mother and her child were currently in.

Dallas ISD to honor A&M-Commerce Alum Sorrells


Dallas – The Dallas Independent School District is recognizing Dr. Rosie Sorrells, an education trailblazer and Texas A&M University-Commerce alumna, for a lifetime of service to children and public education with a naming ceremony on Friday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.

Sorrells will be honored with the Rosie Sorrells School of Edcuation and Social Services at the Yvonne E. Ewell Townview Center.

Law enforcement to begin seizure of local motel


Greenville – The U. S. Marshal Service will be in Greenville Thursday to begin the seizure process of the Dream Lodge Motel, which was a focus in a major drug bust last December.

An investigation from April to December, 2009 resulted in 31 arrests in connection with a crack cocaine distribution conspiracy operation. The motel was believed being used to conduct a criminal enterprise in the organized distribution of narcotics and prostitution.
