Sulphur Springs – A Red River County girl was listed in critical condition Tuesday after a tragic accident at the Hopkins County Civic Center.
Five-year-old Dixie Tabb, of Bogota, was reportedly kicked in the head by a horse at the Equine Pavilion. Officials say she was leading a horse into the pavilion when she was kicked by another horse.
Tabb was transported to Children's Hospital in Dallas.
Hopkins County – While the jobless figures are still not where officials want them to be, Hopkins County can celebrate the fact that their rate remains the lowest of any immediate eight county region, now for the 29th consecutive month.
Figures released this week by the Texas Workforce Commission show the jobless rate in Hopkins County declined slightly from July to August, now at 6.8 percent. One year ago, that figure was 6.4 percent.
Celeste – Voters in Celeste have narrowly passed a 13 cent tax rate increase for the upcoming budget year.
The measure was approved by 52 percent of voters. 147 people were in favor of the item, while 135 were against.
The increase brings the district's maintenance and operations (M&O) property tax rate to $1.17 per $100 valuation. It's expected to generate an additional $366,000 in revenue.
Mesquite – The Texas A&M University-Commerce department of curriculum and instruction will host its sixth annual graduate orientation on Wednesday, Sept. 22 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the university's Metroplex Center in Mesquite.
Commerce – Arizona's controversial immigration law was the topic of discussion during the latest Diversity in Dialogue event held Wednesday on the A&M-Commerce campus.
The program's Guest speaker, Victoria Neave, is an attorney with the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Civil Rights Commission.
Neave provided information on the Arizona law, plus other immigration guidelines and similar cases to the Arizona law from years past.
GREENVILLE – More than two months after Hunt County authorities found bags of marijuana which had allegedly been dropped from a plane, a sixth bag has been found.
Bonham – A six year prison term is ordered for former Fannin County tax assessor Pamela Sweet, who was arrested for a DWI twice within a five week period last year.
Sweet will be eligible for parole in 18 months. She was arrested on a DWI charge in March, 2009. After resigning from her duties in July, 2009, she was again arrested following a one-car accident later that month. Sweet admitted to having consumed a large amount of alcohol and to taking prescription medication earlier in the day.
Grayson County – A deadly mobile home fire in Grayson County Monday night is being investigated as a homicide.
Three people were found dead in the home; near the intersection of FM 1417 and Highway 82.
Two of the deceased are females in their late twenties, and the third is a man around 30. All three were dead upon the arrival of emergency responders.
Investigators say the fire was suspicious. The ATF and Dallas County Medical Examiner have been brought in to assist in the investigation.
