Commissioner LaPrade's job remains in doubt


Van Zandt County – An amended petition has been filed by an East Texas resident which seeks the removal of a Van Zandt County commissioner.

The petition concerning Ricky LaPrade was filed in Van Zandt County District Court.

KLTV reports the Precinct 1 Commissioner was recently arrested on separate occasions for drunk driving. The first incident occurred in April, with the second alleged offense earlier this month. He was also arrested this year for misappropriation of fiduciary property.

Final pieces of burn ban puzzle fall into place


Paris – There are no longer any gaps in Northeast Texas when it comes to burn bans.

Lamar and Red River County Commissioners Monday followed the stance taken by 245 other Texas counties, bringing the grand total to 247. The bans will remain in effect for 90 days unless cancelled beforehand.

Just a handful of counties in South, Southeast and one in Northwest Texas remain free of the restriction.

Greenville calls on residents to conserve water


Greenville – Citing a lack of rainfall, Greenville City Manager Steven Alexander has announced the implementation of water conservation measures for the City of Greenville.

In 2007, the City of Greenville updated a 1999 Water Conservation and Drought Contingency plan and yesterday, the City Manger indicated that Greenville is at Stage 2, Moderate water shortage conditions.

Local Salvation Army struggling to help citizens


Bonham – The Fannin County Salvation Army is seeking additional funds to help local families.

Bonham Police Chief Mike Bankston runs the county chapter, and says lately there have been a lot of requests for electrical assistance as the extreme heat makes for high energy costs.

The Fannin County Salvation Army helped over 300 families last year, by way of emergency housing, groceries and clothing.

Donations can be made through The American Bank of Texas in Bonham.

ESCO cleanup prepares to enter sixth month


Greenville – A status meeting is scheduled Tuesday night on the cleanup of the former ESCO Manufacturing site in Greenville.

The remediation of the EPA Superfund site began in March with the dismantling of the tin and aluminum of the plant building and the initial excavation of the soil surrounding the structure. Crews are expected to remain on site until September.

Third Thursday Songwriters Night Enlivens Commerce Square
