Sen. Deuell to be awarded by civil service group


– Texans for Lawsuit Reform PAC will honor State Senator Robert Deuell Friday during a ceremony in Greenville.

Deuell will be presented with the TLR Civil Justice Leadership Award, which is given to lawmakers who support a fair and balanced civil justice system in Texas.

Thursday's event begins at noon at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center.

May 13 marks anniversary of major storm


Greenville – Thursday marks the 25th anniversary of one of the worst storms to hit the region, causing major damage especially in Greenville.

Much of downtown Greenville was left in ruins on May 13, 1985, as at least one and as many as two tornados struck locally. Nine people were injured, none seriously, although hundreds of structures were either destroyed or heavily damaged.

Varga executed for 1998 slaying in Hunt County


Huntsville – Texas has executed a South Dakota parolee convicted of helping to rob and fatally beat an Army officer 12 years ago in Greenville.

Forty-one-year-old Kevin Varga was given lethal injection Wednesday night. The victim, David Logie, was in the area on business at the time.

A Texas Prison System spokesperson says Varga used his last statement to apologize to the Logies' family.

"He said I know I took someone very precious from you; myself and Mr. Galloway. Please forgive me."

Hunt County to conduct recount from May 8 election


Greenville – Commerce resident Sue Davis has requested a recount of Saturday's election results for the City Council Place 2 seat. Davis was defeated by Incumbent Bob Monday by one vote, 236-235.

The Hunt County Voter Administration Office received the request Tuesday. They're scheduled to conduct a recount beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

KETR will provide election finals for you as soon as they are made available.

Pleas entered in New Year's Day shooting


Greenville – A Garland man has issued two not guilty pleas in connection to a New Year's Day shooting in Commerce.

Carlos Anthony Maar had to be bench warranted from state prison to appear in court for Wednesday's arraignment. An interim hearing was scheduled for June 2.

Maar received two indictments for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing bodily injury.

Commerce Police report gunfire erupted at The Lodge along Live Oak Street on January 1st during a New Year's celebration.

Paris woman dies from injuries from wreck


Dallas – A Paris woman has died from injuries received following a one vehicle wreck north of the city last Friday.

47-year-old Jeri Hancock died this week at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

Last week's accident occurred on FM 1500 about 12 miles from town.

According to State Troopers, Hancock failed to negotiate a curve, lost control of her vehicle and it overturned.

Officials show support for local industry


Paris – The Paris City Council and Lamar County Commissioners Monday voiced their support of Turner Industries, amid claims of racial discrimination by some of the plant's employees.

An investigation by the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission has raised concern for the longevity of the business in Paris.

Dan Smith, board chairman of the city's economic development corporation, told commissioners that Turner provides 700 jobs and a $35 million annual payroll for the area.

More emissions-sensing vans to appear along highways


– Drivers will see a few more emissions-sensing vans along North Texas highways throughout ozone season.

The vans are usually parked along freeway entrance ramps, and as drivers accelerate past it, a device records the amount of ozone-forming pollutants emitted from each vehicle. Owners of vehicles shown to be high-emitting or smoking receive a letter emphasizing the importance of vehicle maintenance.
