Grandmother charged in death of boy found in Wylie


Wylie – The grandmother of the six-year-old boy found dead near Lake Lavon appeared in a Collin County courtroom Monday on murder charges.

63-year-old Darlene Phillips was recently arrested on the charge.

An affidavit revealed that Gerren Isgrigg was abandoned three days before his body was found in Wylie, apparently alive at the time.

Isgrigg suffered from West Syndrome, a rare epileptic disorder that resulted in seizures and him being fed through a feeding tube.

Reception for outgoing police chief Thursday


Greenville – The public is invited to a retirement reception this Thursday in Greenville to honor Police Chief Harold Roseberry.

Roseberry announced his retirement last month, having served 34 years for the city during his 37 year career in law enforcement. His final day is Friday, April 30.

Thursday's event takes place from 3 - 6 p.m. at the Fletcher Warrant Civic Center. That will be preceded by a Changing of the Guard Ceremony at the Police and Courts Building along Lee Street, at 1 p.m.

Williams' trial for assault set for Tuesday


Greenville – Trial begins Tuesday for a Greenville man charged in viscous beating one year ago.

Randy Lee Williams has pleaded not guilty to an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge.

The incident in question occurred in April 2009. Williams reportedly beat a male victim until he was unconscious and beyond, requiring the individual to be hospitalized.

Williams has nine prior felony convictions on his record.

McKinney man charged in Greenville robbery


Greenville – A Collin County man is indicted in an area bank robbery case. Justin DeShaun Simmons, of McKinney, was one of two people named in the indictment.

The two were reportedly involved in a holdup at the Bank of America in Greenville in September 2009.

Simmons was arrested two days later and was said to have confessed to the crime, and provided the name of an alleged accomplice. The status of the charges, if any, against the other individual was not immediately available.

Commerce – Texas A&M University-Commerce continues to ease the transition for incoming students after being selected as one of eight colleges and universities to participate in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Postsecondary System beginning next fall.

Early voting begins for local elections


– Early voting for the May 8 municipal elections begins Monday.

Area cities will hold both city council and school board elections. Voters in Commerce and Greenville will also be considering proposed amendments to each city's charter.

Early voting continues through May 4 at your local elections office, courthouse or city administration officer.

City settles sex offender ordinance lawsuit


Commerce – The Commerce City Council, after two years of legal dealings, settled their sex offender ordinance lawsuit Friday following a mediation hearing in Dallas.

John Doe 7 vs. City of Commerce was filed in November 2007 and claimed the ordinance was unconstitutional.

According to Commerce Mayor Quay Throgmorton, the vote was 3-2 in favor of the settlement, with the Mayor, Councilman Bob Monday and Tony Henry voting for, while Billie Biggerstaff and Richard Hill voted against.
