Local election finals for Tuesday, Nov. 3


– Local elections throughout Northeast Texas showed mixed results regarding area alcohol sales, bond items and a possible city incorporation.

All Hunt County local items failed Tuesday night.

Residents of Quinlan and Wolfe City by slim margins voted against the sale of beer and wine at off-premise locations. The second item also failed in both cities, which would have allowed residents to purchase alcoholic beverages at licensed establishments without having to become a member of a private club.

Appeal in local bank robbery conviction upheld


Greenville – An appeals court in Texarkana has upheld the conviction of Jose Martin Guevara, charged in the robbery of a Greenville bank.

Guevara, of Rockwall, is said to have robbed the American National Bank at gunpoint in January, 2008. He would later be convicted of the crime and sentence to 25 years in prison.

The jury took only about 25 minutes before returning a guilty verdict following a half-day of testimony.

Man to be released due to lack of evidence


Quinlan – A Quinlan-area man could be released from custody following a judge's ruling that there was no probable cause to hold him.

The defense attorney for Jeffery Feagin had filed for an examining trial to determine if his client should remain in jail. But during Monday's hearing no probable cause was determined after the Hunt County District Attorney's office provided no evidence.

Woman charged with three felony counts in crash


Paris – A Paris woman is charged with multiple felony counts after intentionally hitting two occupied vehicles with her suburban.

The incident occurred Saturday morning in the 200 block of Lamar Avenue.

34-year-old Juana Ibarra was placed under arrest. As there were a total of three people occupying the two vehicles, Ibarra was charged with 3 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Upon arrival to Paris PD, she refused to sign all required paperwork and was placed into a jail cell.

Small bomb detonated in Hopkins County


Hopkins County – The Dallas Bomb Squad is called into to detonate a small device over the weekend following a traffic stop in Hopkins County.

The suspect has been identified as 20-year-old Joshua Clanton, of Birthright.

Clanton was stopped on FM 3236, and admitted to deputies that he had a bomb in his pickup. Residents in the area were immediately evacuated before officials made the detonation on what was described as a very large homemade firecracker.

College enrollment figures see big jump


– Enrollment at Texas colleges is at 1.38 million, up nine percent compared with a year ago. It may be the biggest one year increase ever. Some officials say it's caused by the recession.

It appears colleges locally are following that same trend.

A report from early September showed enrollment was up nearly seven percent at Texas A&M University-Commerce to approximately 9,700 students. Paris Junior College was at about a ten percent increase at more than 1,300 students.

Guilty plea expected in school drug case


– A Dallas women could plead guilty today to possessing drugs on a local school district campus.

Christy Antoinette Miles and Gary Desmond Allen, of Greenville, each is charged with delivery of marijuana and the possession of a controlled substance, namely PCP.

The incident occurred on the Boles ISD campus in February.

Miles is also charged with one count of unlawful possession of a weapon in a drug free zone and abandoning/endangering a child for exposing a passenger in the vehicle to the drugs.

Hearing to determine jail status of local man


– A court hearing Monday will determine whether a Hunt County man will remain in jail. Jeffery Feagin is being held in the Hunt County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant.

Late last month, a judge denied a reduction in his bond. A motion has been filed for an examining trial, which is a hearing to determine whether probable cause exists to send a felony case on to the grand jury.

Area TEA Party features new Republican Party Chair


Mt. Pleasant – Another area Taxed Enough Already event features new Republican Party of Texas Chairwoman Cathy Adams.

It will take place tonight in Mt. Pleasant.

The TEA Party also includes comments from Tommy Oglesby, Bo Rester, and Dr. Isaac Osborne. Hopkins County GOP chairman Erwin Cain, who recently announced he'll be challenging incumbent democrat Mark Homer for the Texas legislature, will also speak.

The event gets underway at 6:15.

Interim treasurer named in Delta County


Delta County – Delta County Commissioners have named former treasurer Glynna Herin to an interim role following the resignation of Phyllis London.

Herin served as county treasurer for 20 years before being defeated two years ago. She will serve at least until the March election.

London, after serving at the post for two years, resigned citing health reasons.
