Hopkins County murder re-trial set for Monday


Hopkins County – Jury selection begins today in the re-trial of a Hopkins County man, accused of murdering his brother.

John Arlen Walkers, of Pickton, was convicted in 2004 and sentenced to 30 years in prison. His convicted was then overturned on appeal.

District Attorney Martin Braddy will prosecute, and Ron Fergerson will represent Walters.

GEUS rates to increase this month


Greenville – In a recent statement, the Greenville Electric Utility System has indicated customers will incur a slight increase in service as of this month.

The Utility's Fuel Adjustment Charge\\Power Cost Recovery Factor (FAC\\PCRF) will be raised by slightly to 3.484 cents\\kWh, up from 2.5 cents for all commercial and residential bills.

The price is still far less than last summer's peak of 7.426 cents when the cost of natural gas reached record highs.

Body found on HW 50 that of Paris woman


Campbell – The body of a woman found dead last week near Campbell has been identified as a Paris resident.

The Hunt County Sheriff's office said Thursday they were able to notify the family of 37-year-old Tammy Ann Morgan, of her death. Morgan was pronounced dead upon emergency arrival Saturday in the middle of Highway 50.

A white male reportedly approached deputies after their arrival and informed them the woman was his girlfriend and that the death was a suicide, as she had reportedly jumped from his vehicle.

Wood County school to close due to high absenteeism


Alba – Alba-Golden schools in Wood County will be closed today and Monday after a high numbers of students were absent due to illnesses.

The district is reporting 20-21 percent absenteeism. Officials say the closure is due to general illness, not H1N1 or any other bug.

Chisum ISD in Paris also closed for two days this week due to the number of student illnesses.

Suspect identified in Greenville bank robbery


Greenville – An arrest may be coming soon in connection to a Wednesday morning bank robbery in Greenville.

Police were in the process of securing a warrant as of Thursday afternoon, according to Police Chief Harold Roseberry.

No weapons were used and no one was hurt during the hold-up at the Bank of America along Joe Ramsey Boulevard.

Hopkins County murder case to be revisited


Hopkins County – A federal court is reopening the capital murder case of a Delta County man, after scientists claim they've found 15 errors in the victim's autopsy.

Daniel Clate Acker had previously been convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of Marquetta George.

The autopsy done on her body was performed by a trainee.

The Dallas Medical Examiner said that George was strangled and then pushed from Acker's truck, but the defense claims she was killed when she jumped out of the vehicle.

National Night Out to take place Tuesday


– The 26th Annual National Night Out event takes place Tuesday, Oct. 6 throughout the region.

The event is put on to encourage people across the country to get to know each other, while meeting with law enforcement authorities and learning ways to prevent crime, drug abuse and violence in their communities.

Neighborhoods in Greenville can sign up for the event at 903-457-3118.

Festivities in Commerce will be centrally located at City Park from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evening, with food and games to be provided.

Thousands recovered in multi-county theft arrest


Hunt County, Grayson County – A Sherman man is arrested in connection to thefts spanning two counties and resulting in thousands of dollars in lost merchandise.

Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) Special Ranger Troy McKinney, along with the Hunt and Grayson County Sheriffs' Departments, recovered and returned more than $80,000 of stolen property.

Paris man arrested for injury to child


Paris – Paris Police have arrested a man believed to have intentionally injured a child and used a patio table as a weapon on his family.

25-year-old Chadrick Self was arrested yesterday on a number of charges included two felony counts of injury to a child.
