Sentencing hearing set for Thursday for Campbell man


Campbell – A Campbell man will learn next week how long he'll spend in prison for the murder of his wife.

32-year-old James Ray Brown Jr. will receive his sentence next Thursday, after having pleaded guilty to murdering his wife in June. A judge Thursday scheduled next week's hearing, which had previously been postponed.

Brown is said to have killed 28-year-old Avis Baker Brown at the couples' residence in October, 2008. He is facing a maximum sentence of from five to 99 years to life in prison.

Not guilty plea heard in weapons and money theft


Hunt County, Kaufman County – A Kaufman County man pleads not guilty to weapons and money theft charges from a Hunt County residence in 2006.

Thomas Lee Potter was brought under a bench warrant from state prison to court for Thursday's arraignment. He was appointed an attorney, and a tentative trial date was set for October 12.

Potter, of Terrell, was indicted in 2007 on one count of theft of property of a value of between $20,000 and $100,000. He was alleged to have stolen a rifle, pistol and $10,000 cash in July, 2006.

Convicted robber pleads not guilty to drug possession


Greenville – A Greenville man, convicted a decade ago for two armed robberies, has pleaded not guilty to two drug possession charges.

Gary Desmond Allen was one of two people indicted earlier this year for possession of the drugs within 1,000 ft of the Boles ISD campus.

He received one indictment for delivery of marijuana, and for the manufacture and possession of a controlled substance, mainly PCP, in February. An interim hearing in the case has been scheduled for September 8.

New school guidelines a sign of the times


– The topics of social networking websites and sexting have found their way into the handbooks of grade school students across Texas. School District boards are approving the new measures prior to the start of the fall semester, to help better inform and protect students.

Students are not to use the name or picture of a student, district employee or volunteer and post without the person's consent for the purposes of harassing or embarrassing another, regardless of when and from where they posted it.

Fire chief accepted to national program


Greenville – Greenville Fire Chief Doug Caison has been accepted to the 2010 class of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program (EFOP).

Caison will attend the program at the Department of Homeland Security - FEMA National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland from April 26, through May 7, 2010.

Commerce to hold third budget workshop


Commerce – The City of Commerce will hold its third of five budget workshops Thursday evening in the Executive Conference Room at City Hall. All meetings will start at 6:00 p.m.

For Thursday, August 6, the parks and recreation department will be discussed, along with community development and municipal court.

A budget workshop for the city manager, governmental affairs, city council and administrative services will be held on Monday, August 10.
