Not guilty plea heard in injury to child case


West Tawakoni – A West Tawakoni man has pleaded not guilty to two counts of serious injury to a child.

Christopher Scott Fried is facing a sentence of up to life in prison if convicted of either of the charges of injury to a child by an act with family violence and deadly weapon finding. Fried was arraigned Monday and a tentative trial date was set for February 22.

Body of soldier to arrive Wednesday morning


Greenville – The body of U.S. Army SPC. Joseph Michael Lewis, of Terrell, who was killed in Afghanistan on Nov. 17, will arrive at Majors Field Municipal Airport in Greenville Wednesday morning at 11:20 a.m.

A motorcade is scheduled to take Lewis to Anderson Clayton Brothers Funeral Home in Terrell, where visitation is scheduled from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday. The route will be the same as has been used in previous motorcades.

Officials seize dozens of animals in Delta County


Cooper – Over 100 dogs were seized from a Delta County property Monday in an alleged case of animal cruelty.

Sheriff's deputies and the SPCA of Texas also removed seven donkeys, four chinchillas and one cockatiel.

The dogs were reportedly kept in pens and forced to live in sewage, a mixture of mud, urine and feces.

Salvation Army to hold free Thanksgiving feast


Greenville – The Salvation Army of Hunt County will be hosting a free Thanksgiving sit-down meal starting at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The event will take place at the agency's local headquarters, 4601 King Street in Greenville.

Volunteers are being requested to help serve the dinner, which is designed to feed up to 200 people.

Injured Wood County official out of hospital


Tyler – A Wood County official is released from the hospital, nearly a week after being attacked by a mentally ill man in Mineola.

Constable Ed Shadbolt is said to have suffered three fractured ribs and a small puncture to his left lung. He will be working again, but with limited duties until his doctor says otherwise.

At last report, no charges had been filed against the alleged attacker patient.

Theater production selected to region competition


Commerce – A recent production at the Texas A&M University-Commerce Playhouse has received a special honor.

The cast and crew of the Bird and Bee have been nominated to represent Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri at the Region IV Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival.

Accident claims life of Delta County man


Greenville – A Delta County man is killed Sunday following a two vehicle wreck on Hwy 34 south of Greenville.

41-year-old Gary Don Hooten, of Klondike, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to State Troopers, Hooten was driving a motorcycle northbound on HW 43 when the driver of another vehicle failed to yield the right-of-way and turned in front of him. A collision would ensue and Hooten was ejected from his bike.

Soldier's body to arrive in Greenville Wednesday


Greenville – Another soldier killed in Afghanistan will return to Texas Wednesday through the Greenville airport. Army SPC Joseph Michael Lewis, of Terrell, is to be flown into Greenville Wednesday at a time to be determined.

The family has requested that those who desire, line the roadway along FM 1570 between the Airport and Hwy. 34 to pay their respects. He will then be transported to Terrell where funeral arrangements are pending with Anderson Clayton Brothers Funeral Home.

County to participate in emergency notification program


Hunt County – Commissioners Monday approved Hunt County's involvement in the Immediate Response Information System (IRIS) Program.

The City of Commerce, Commerce ISD and A&M-Commerce have been utilizing the system for more than a year.

The interlocal agreement allows elected officials, department heads and others to participate at a cost of $3.60 per person. Commerce citizens are charged an annual fee of $6.

Murder suspect says he acted in self defense


Greenville – A Greenville man claims he was acting in self defense when he shot and killed another local resident in August.

Joshua William Lay entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment Monday for the murder of Darryl Dwayne Feggett, of Greenville.

Lay remains in custody at the Hunt County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond. A tentative trial date was set for March.
