A&M-Commerce launches New Online Master’s Degree in Biology

COMMERCE - The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Texas A&M University-Commerce has recently launched a fully-online Master’s of Science degree in biological science.

The degree program will be available this summer to anyone with a bachelor’s degree and some biology background. The program is designed to provide opportunities for students to pursue advanced training in biology using a non-thesis option.

“The department of biological and environmental sciences has had a successful graduate program in biology for decades, but for many people, because of their jobs and location, there was simply no feasible way to enter or complete the program within a satisfactory time frame,” said Dr. Haydn A. “Chip” Fox, director of the environmental science program and assistant professor of biological and environmental sciences. “One of the most notable groups hampered in this way has been public school teachers.”

Fox explained that teachers are encouraged, and sometimes required, to pursue a master's degree, but do not have the time in a regular school year to accomplish this task, leaving only summers to pursue a graduate degree.

“The new fully-online biology master's degree will enable teachers, or anyone else, to complete the degree in as little as two years,” Fox said. “Offering the online option to prospective students unable to attend the university in person is a win-win situation for everyone.”
