A&M-Commerce Lions Blow By Angelo State to Clinch Playoff Berth (Slideshow)

The Texas A&M-Commerce Lions showed up and showed out for a Senior Day matchup on Saturday as they defeated the Angelo State Rams, 41-13 at Memorial Stadium.

The victory kept the Lions hot, finishing the regular season on a four-game win streak.

Ground and pound was the name of the game for the Lions, who finish the regular season 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the Lone Star Conference. Ovie Urevbu took on a big workload and made the most of it. Urevbu rushed for 186 yards on 30 attempts with two touchdowns.

With the win, A&M-Commerce improves its home record against ASU to 15-12-1 all-time.

The Lions began the game with a touchdown on the first possession. However, the Rams, (6-5, 4-4) kept it close in the early going thanks to a pair of first quarter interceptions by Kane Wilson. One of those mistakes, being taken back 55-yards on a pick six by ASU defender Gilbert Gildersleeve for a touchdown.

After the shaky quarter, Lions picked up the pace behind the leg of Kristov Martinez and a 39 yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Marquis Wimberly to close the first half.

“It’s the best football we’ve played all year in all three phases of the game,” head coach Colby Carthel said. “Angelo State came out fired up and we came out with a couple of early turnovers. One was a pick six. That made it a tight ball game there. We really put the hammer down there and played well to close out the half. Then we played really, really sharp the whole second half to keep the game out of hand and secure a really good win heading into the playoffs.”

The highlight in the game came from Dominique Ramsey with four seconds to go in the third quarter when he had a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown. This interception was the second straight interception returned for a touchdown at home by Ramsey for 80+ yards. The last coming against WT for 84-yards on Homecoming night.

Next Matchup: The defending Division ll national champions will get a chance to defend their crown in the NCAA Division ll Playoffs. The Lions earned the No. 6-seed in Super Region Four and will play at No. 3-seed Minnesota-Duluth at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
