Another blow dealt to Commerce economy with CCC closing

COMMERCE - Roughly 40 people, several of whom are students, find themselves unemployed following Sunday’s abrupt closing of the College Corner Café.

Charmaine Bennett, a junior at Texas A&M University-Commerce, was a cashier at the restaurant and bar for four months. She was informed of the news Saturday.

“We were all really and truly sad. The type of employee that I am, it was hard for me to work through it. Because as close as we were, we were all crying... it all just happened so fast.”

According to social media, the closing was the result of an investor’s choice to no longer participate. Bennett was averaging 30 hours a week at CCC. Some of that time will now be spent looking for work.

The business, located adjacent to campus at the corner of Lee and Mayo Streets had been in operation since their soft open on December 31st, 2011. In addition to gourmet burgers and a full-service bar, the live-music-friendly venue recently hosted the continuation of the Commerce Songwriter's Showcase.

The City of Commerce has experienced its fair share of economic highs and lows within the past several years.

The closing of the College Corner Café comes months afternews that a major land and retail development deal, also scheduled to bring dozens of student jobs to town, fell through.

However, the former site of Paesano's Italian Restaurant, which closed in February 2011, may soon provide job opportunities and another dining selection for citizens. The now empty lot along the west side of Highway 50 is scheduled to be the new home of Luigi’s, an Italian caféwhich also has locations in Quinlan, Royse City and Rockwall.
