Council race adds two ahead of March 5 filing deadline

COMMERCE - The latest candidates to file for the Commerce City Council include a school teacher and former assistant police chief.

City Secretary Marty Cunningham reported Monday that Emma Martin and Steve Harrison have filed for Council Place 2.

Martin has taught numerous subjects during her 37 year career, including 28 years at Wolfe City ISD. She currently serves as an art instructor in the Dallas area. Steve Harrison just completed a 14 year stint in the Commerce Police Department. He resigned from his assistant police chief duties last November.

The Mayor’s race in Commerce is currently between two candidates. Coby Marcum is pursuing a Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration at Texas A&M University-Commerce.  His opponent, John Ballotti, is a senior lecturer in the A&M-Commerce department of Mass Media, Communication and Theatre.

Sue Davis is the only unopposed candidate to date. She is the incumbent for Council Place 4.

Filing for the May 12 general election continues through Monday, March 5.

Update; February 28, 12:28 p.m.: KETR had erroneously reported that Coby Marcum was a current member of the Student Government Association at A&M-Commerce. Marcum completed his term with SGA last semester.
