Following a proposition by Thomas Milson to the Delta County Historical Society and Delta County Commissioners Court, it was agreed to allow the erecting of another historical marker on the front lawn of the Courthouse. Nathaniel L. Corbet played a crucial part in Delta County history.

Milson comprised the highlights of Corbet’s impact on Delta County which included: opening the first store in Ben Franklin in 1845, gifted land which helped establish Cooper as the county seat of Delta County in 1870, served more than 20 years in local law enforcement. Corbet was born in 1812 and at the age of 21 joined the Army.

“Later in life he was spotted planting a tree,” recalled Tom Milson on Corbet. “A passerby questioned. Corbet responded he wasn’t planting the tree for himself but for future generations… This is how much he loved this community.”

Shirley Smith with the Delta County Historical Society was present in support of the marker. Milson said this would be at no cost to Delta County. He intends to place the marker, balancing it with the current marker and memorial.

The order for salaries, expenses, and other allowances of Elected Officials for fiscal year 2017-2018 in pursuant to Sec. 152.013 of the Texas Local Government Code were discussed.
