Mourners sang and prayed during a service Tuesday to honor a Richardson police officer who was fatally shot while answering a disturbance call.
The funeral for 37-year-old David Sherrard was held at Watermark Community Church in Dallas. He worked for the police department for more than a dozen years and was the married father of two daughters.
Police Chief Jimmy Spivey called Sherrard a "true hero." He is the first officer to die on duty in the department's 63-year history.
Authorities say Sherrard died Feb. 7 at a hospital hours after he was shot while entering an apartment. Police say another man, identified as Rene Gamez, was found shot dead at the scene.
The suspect, Brandon McCall, eventually surrendered and remains jailed without bond on capital murder charge. Investigators are trying to determine what prompted the disturbance.
