Grayson Extends, Van Zandt Introduces Indefinite Burn Ban

Joshua Newton

Commissioners in Grayson County have extended the temporary burn ban indefinitely. The ban on outdoor burning is now in effect until it rains.

Commissioners are also trying to remind people to think past burning yard waste or trash. Anything that causes a spark can set dry ground alight – cigarettes or chains dragging from a trailer could set off a ground fire as well as any match.

Sherman’s Fox outlet reported today that the city’s fire battalion has answered nine grass fire calls this month.

Meanwhile, Van Zandt County has added itself to the list of counties in Northeast Texas to ban outdoor burning. It too is an open ended ban, which also outlaws fireworks.

As of Tuesday, the Texas A&M Forest Service has labeled all of Northeast Texas as either moderate or high-risk areas for fire danger. Every county in the region has high-risk areas. The entirety of Hunt, Grayson, and Rockwall counties are in the high-risk zone. In fact the nearest area to Northeast Texas that is NOT in at least moderate danger of wildfire today is Beaumont, about 100 miles east of Houston.
