Lions Tip Off Season with Win Over Metro State 70-67

Drew Ivery

Despite their struggles early on offensively, Texas A&M-Commerce claimed their first victory to start their season against Metro State Friday, 70-67.

Forwards Artaejah Gay and Jenna Price picked up two fouls early in the first quarter.

The Lions came out flat offensively going 0-for-5 from the field until forward Brianna Wise put them on the board with an easy layup. Point guard Princess Davis quickly made her overdue presence felt by going off on a 7-0 run for the Lions.

Transfer guard Jasmyn Eckerman showed early signs of being the Lions’ 6th woman off the bench. Her quick hands and awareness defensively will spark the Lions for quick buckets in transition. Eckerman racked up 6 rebounds in the first half, finishing with 2 blocks in 19 minutes of play.

Although Price struggled with limited minutes, she wasn’t fazed in the fourth quarter sinking crucial free throws in the closing minutes of the fourth.

MSU forward Bree Wellington missed both free throws with 48 secs left in the contest but a quick steal and basket from guard Jaelynn Smith put MSU down one point.

Wise came up big with seconds left in the fourth quarter, rebounding the ball after Davis missed both free throws and was fouled on the rebound, sinking both shots. The forward who led the conference last season in free throws, sealed the victory after downing both her free throws with 12 secs remaining, 70-67.
