No. 9 Lions Weather Storm to Upset No. 4 Midwestern State, 20-19

Jessie Cunningham

Two days, two teams and two stadiums led to one A&M-Commerce (5-1,3-0) victory over Midwestern State (5-1,3-1) Sunday afternoon, 20-19. A weather delay stopped the Lions from exacting their revenge at Midwestern State Saturday night. It was the second one of the evening, the previous one delayed kickoff. At halftime a second weather delay was announced extending the break.

Early on both teams struggled to create anything offensively. The Lions got on the board first with a field goal from Kristov Martinez. MSU Texas countered with a touchdown from quarterback Layton Rabb. A 24-yd pass to Ryan Stokes from quarterback Kane Wilson led to the only Lions touchdown of the half. With 5:38 left in the first half, the Mustangs tied up the ball game scoring the only points in the second quarter courtesy of 21-yd field goal from Jaron Imbriani.

Early Sunday morning it was decided the game would resume at UNT’s Apogee Stadium that afternoon. Chippy play and unforced errors kept the game close throughout the second half. MSU Texas’ Vincent Johnson would score the first touchdown of the day rushing 9 yards. An unsportsmanlike penalty on the Mustangs setup quarterback Kane Wilson for a 4-yd rushing touchdown. It would be the only Lions touchdown of the half.

It was a game of chess in the last minute of the contest as both teams took timeouts. Despite help from the Lions with a 5-yd penalty, Jaron Imbriani’s field goal attempt from 30 yards flew wide right as time expired. It’s the first Lions win in the series since 2015 and gave the Mustangs their first loss of the season.

Next Saturday the Lions take on undefeated Tarleton State (5-0, 4-0) in the battle for the President’s Cup at Memorial Stadium. Lion fans can get up to four (4) general admission tickets to the Tarleton game for 50% off through Monday at 10 p.m. at WeAreLionsTix.com by using coupon code "BEATTARLETON".
