According to a press release the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is accepting Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) applications in 30 counties across Texas as part of the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) efforts supported by the Oaks and Prairies Joint Venture (OPJV) – Grassland Restoration Incentives Program (GRIP) Partnership.

The Roxton ISD in Lamar County announced Wednesday that it may consolidate with another school district. The announcement was made in the Roxton Progress newspaper. It states that financial problems in the district are creating "an increasingly deep and unsustainable budget shortfall.”

The ISD is reportedly in talks with at least two neighboring districts. The question of a merger could find its way onto a November ballot.

Two road improvement projects have started on Farm-to-Market 38 in Delta and Lamar Counties, according to Texas Department of Transportation.

TxDOT reports that Contractor A.K. Gillis & Sons, Sulphur Springs, Texas, was awarded the contract for this project valued at more than $2.4 million. The contractor plans to complete the work in 128 working days, weather permitting, with a target completion date of October 2018. Construction began on April 9, 2018.

The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office says deputies arrested a Prairiland High School senior Monday on charges of making terroristic threats.

Officials in Lamar County say multiple wildfires have led them to extend the county’s burn ban for another month. On Tuesday the County Commissioner’s Court extended the ban until January 10.

The Commissioner's Court also doubled the possible penalty. Anyone caught burning brush or leaves could face a $1000 fine.

Despite some weekend rainfall, drought conditions are back to moderate throughout much of Northeast Texas.

A higher percentage of students from Northeast Texas finished college than students statewide. That’s according to data put together by the Texas Tribune, which looked at graduation rates among 300,000 public school students who completed 8th grade in 2005. Statewide, 21 percent of those students have graduated from college by now. Ten of the 11 counties comprising Northeast Texas exceeded that average. Hunt County was the only one to come in below the state average.

Local fire departments and emergency services agencies continue to head to the Houston/Galveston area.

The effort to move a controversial Confederate statue from the Lamar County Courthouse in Paris will have to wait.

Lauren Corbell, city editor and columnist of the Paris News, reports that the North Lamar ISD has scheduled a $44.9 million bond election for Saturday, May 6.  Lauren says the North Lamar school board consulted with the public to find out why a previous bond proposal failed.  And Lauren reports the annual Paris Winefest is planned for this Saturday, April 1.  It's a fund raiser to benefit the downtown Paris Main Street program.
