Sales tax payments up in region

By Scott Harvey

Sales tax payments continue to increase in the area. Customers in Commerce spent about $4,000 more at local merchants in June of this year that they did last year.

The figures are according to a report issued Wednesday by the Texas Comptroller's Officer.

The City is to receive a sales tax payment of nearly $95,000 this month, an increase of 4.52% from what the city collected in August 2007. So far this fiscal year, Commerce has received $733,306 in sales tax revenue, representing an increase of just 1.44% percent from the $722,842 the City had collected through the same point in 2007.

Greenville will be receiving a sales tax payment of nearly $514,000, an increase of 1.27% in sales tax rebates. The City of Sulphur Springs will see an increase of 13.34%, Paris a nearly 13% increase, and Bonham a more than 6% increase in sale tax revenue.
