New Parks and Rec Director to be named soon

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – The City of Commerce is closing in on naming its next parks and recreation director.

Interviews with six candidates, including one in-house, were conducted this week. Half of the candidates are from the Commerce region. Interviews were also held with residents from College Station, McAllen, and Indianapolis, Indiana.

A new director of parks and recreation is expected to be named by October.

Director of Community Development Steve Wilson had been serving at the post since January, but has now taken over responsibilities as city planner, upon the resignation of Janet McPherson earlier in August.

Former Parks and Recreation Director Bob Mills retired last December.
