Commerce – The Commerce ISD Monday night honored outgoing Board Member Donna Tavener for her years of service. She had chosen not to seek a third term on the board. A resident of the city since 1977, Tavener currently works as the director of educator preparation at A&M-Commerce and has served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the past four years.
"My last for years of serving on the Commerce ISD Board of Trustees has been very fulfilling," said Tavener. "I feel I've been able to take my background as a classroom teacher, and also someone involved in teacher certification at the university, and bring insight to the board in making decisions."
Tavener has also served as a coach for the University for six years, an instructor at the Greenville ISD for 15 and prior to becoming a board member, an instructor at Commerce ISD for five years.
"The last four years some have been difficult and trying for Commerce ISD with several superintendents." Tavener continued, "But I feel that hiring Mr. Blake Cooper has been a very positive choice for the district and we've made great strides. And also passing the bond election to build A.C. Williams is providing our students with the greatest technology and facilities. I'm just real proud of the accomplishments that have been made in the four years that I've been able to serve on the board."
With plans to retire in August, Tavener hopes to spend her extra time serving as a mentor with organizations like the Communities In Schools program, plus engage in other volunteerism efforts.
Tavener was presented with a glass vase during Monday's ceremony. Gabe Wittkopf was sworn in Monday as her replacement for Place 2, winning the seat during the May 8 election over two challengers.
