Move in underway at new Music Building
By Scott Harvey
Commerce – Crews are currently in the process of moving into the new Music Building at Texas A&M University-Commerce, as workers put the final touches on the nearly $30 million project.
This week marks the fourth week in the move, a very tedious process when you factor in all the instruments and other sensitive materials that need transported.
Still ahead is work on the facility's two tunable' performing venues; a 500-seat concert hall and 75-seat recital hall.
According to Department Head Dr. Chris White, the recital hall should come online by the end of September, while the concert hall should be available for use by the Department's annual holiday concert in December.
"Finishing the concert hall doesn't mean we can use it yet; we have to get all the technology right," said Dr. White. "We have to get classes on how to operate it it's a tunable concert hall, so we're going to have to have some training on just how to use it."
However, classrooms are available for use beginning August 30, the first day of the fall semester.
"People who come through the building one of their first comments is, there's so much more to it than what you did outside," Dr. White said. "A lot of people did some really good work."
A dedication ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 5, featuring a performance by The Swingle Singers; a world-class, multi-Grammy award-winning a cappella group from London.
