Silver Leos to offer free writing course

By Brent Lyday

Commerce – Business professionals and community members interested in improving their communication and writing skills are invited to attend a free writing course from the Texas A&M University-Commerce Silver Leos Writers Guild. The story anatomy class begins Aug. 30 and lasts through December 13.

The non-credit course will be taught in two sections by Dr. Fred Tarpley, Silver Leos adviser. Both sections will be held on Monday, with the first lasting from 10 a.m. until noon, and the second from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The elements of writing will be dissected into manageable topics for discussion and application each week.

The course is designed for both fiction and non-fiction writers. Starting with paragraphs, the class will move on to purpose, style, openers, conclusions, transitions, usage, tone, figurative language, organization, punctuation, and other vital topics for successful writing.

Writing samples will get constructive critiques and class members will receive developmental editing and copyediting from fellow writers. Students will also learn to evaluate their own work.

Registration should be completed by Aug. 23 by contacting Dr. Tarpley at 903-886-6498 or at Fred_Tarpley@tamu-commerce.edu. Early registration is encouraged. The Silver Leos Writers Guild meets from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. Contact Dr. Tarpley for more information.
