Big changes locally under redistricting proposal

– A proposed redistricting in Texas may pit several area representatives against each other.

A proposal released Wednesday by Burt Solomon, chairman of the House Redistricting Committee, includes but is not limited to, joining Hopkins County, currently under District 3, with House District 2.

If the redistricting plan is adopted, District 3 Representative Erwin Cain would face District 2 Representative Dan Flynn in the 2012 GOP Primary, if both decided to seek reelection. Cain, of Sulphur Springs, currently represents the citizens of Hopkins, Lamar, Delta, Red River, Titus, and Franklin counties. Flynn, of Van, covers Hunt, Rains and Van Zandt counties.

Under the plan, District 3 would be completely dismantled, to be comprised of two Southeast Texas counties.

The proposal would also affect several additional local counties and districts. It links Lamar with Red River, Franklin and Bowie counties (District 1), Delta with Fannin and Grayson counties (District 62), and Rains with Titus with Camp, Wood, Rains and Morris counties (District 5).

Hearings on the plan will begin Friday and more changes are likely.
