Public's vote sought in band competition
By Scott Harvey
Commerce – Up to $25,000 is up for grabs as area high school bands participate in the State Farm Original Score Contest, and they need your support.
Commerce High School is among the participants. Now until midnight Saturday you can vote for their music video titled Adventure!, written by senior Jason Anthraper.
"I've been writing songs basically since my sophomore year," Anthraper said. "Basically I just sat down and tried to think of Texas-type stuff and some of the ideas for the song came into my head. I kept with it; talking with my band director, Mr. [Monty] Ashcraft, and he helped me with that and it came out to this song. I really like it and everyone else seems to enjoy it as well."
Half of the video shows the band performing the song, while the other half shows different parts of Texas. Students are seen playing instruments in a bluebonnet field, on the campus of A&M-Commerce, the high school band's practice field and you see video of the downtown Dallas skyline.
"So we tried to mix both music from the band and Texas all into this video," said Anthraper.
The entire band helped in the creation of the video.
The goal of the contest is to offer educators and students a unique, engaging and valuable Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) - based learning experience and award high school music programs for excellence in musical collaboration, creativity and performance.
Winning ensembles will be determined based on their composite score comprising three components: Public vote; judges scores based on standard competition criteria and integration of TEKS and; judges scores from music industry panel, including members of Los Lonely Boys and other professionals.
