Cooper pleads guilty to KFC killing

PARIS - An East Texas resident has been sentenced in Lamar County to 45 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend’s grandfather.

27-year-old Dustin Cooper, of Center, pleaded guilty to the charge, which occurred in May at the Paris KFC.

The Paris News reports that Cooper was arrested after shooting 53-year-old Patrick Gandy five times inside the restaurant. Cooper and Gandy had traveled together from Center and stopped at KFC. Once there, Cooper reportedly advised store employees to clear the restaurant and flashed a gun. Soon after, Gandy was killed.

Police were never able to determine a motive for the murder. Cooper’s insanity defense was not supported by court appointed psychiatrists.
