Recycling in Commerce? Yes, please!

COMMERCE - Look no further than an almost overflowing recycling bin to understand the support behind the effort to go green in Commerce.

It’s been eight months since the city partnered with Keep Commerce Beautiful and City Sanitation to provide the free service on the first Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

By 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2 at least 75 people had arrived to drop off items ranging from empty milk jugs to old newspapers.

Volunteer Anne Mills says it’s been a real treat to see the support, which has come in all forms. Students from the Commerce ISD are being educated on the process and will come by with their parents. She also notes that senior citizens are helping friends and neighbors whose mobility is limited by bringing recyclable items for them.

A large portion of materials are coming from local businesses, who are given the chance to do so during the week, while citizens can drop off items once a month.

“We’re emptying the recycling containers twice a month. We’re doing it after each recycling Saturday, and then we have to do it one more time right before we have a recycling Saturday because it’s full. And mainly that’s coming from commercial and institutions.”

The next recycling Saturday is July 7. The bin is located at the Wastewater Plant on FM 3218 or Bus Barn Road.  Non-residents can go to Commerce City Hall and purchase a permit to recycle for $10 annually. Here’s a list of acceptable and non-acceptable items.
