COMMERCE - Flags on the A&M-Commerce campus are at half staff Monday to honor Professor Emeritus Dr. Otha Spencer, a Spirit of Mayo Award recipient and distinguished alumni.
Dr. Spencer’s employment with the university spanned 47 years (from 1945 – 1992). He died Friday.
He has written over 300 illustrated magazine articles and published 10 books. In 1991, Dr. Spencer was named Commerce Citizen of the Year, the same year he started the Commerce Public Library Literacy Program with Nan Clay, which is still in operation. He also established the photojournalism program at the university.
