Pool viability workshop set for Monday

Commerce Tigersharks

Commerce residents interested in the city's options for maintaining a public swimming pool can hear details at a public workshop tonight.

A broken water pump, along with other needed repairs, has prompted the city to close the municipal poll indefinitely.

City manager Marc Clayton helped organize tonight's meeting. The city estimates it would cost over $200,000 to re-open the pool. The pool, when open, costs about $60,000 annually to operate.

The nearest pools open to the public - with membership fees and other restrictions - are at Texas A&M University-Commerce and the Greenville YMCA.

Melinda Reid, an organizer for the youth swim group Commerce Tigersharks, told the Commerce Journal that the 45 children from Hunt and Hopkins counties in the Tigersharks depend on the pool for the team's practices.

"We really want our pool to survive," Reid said.

Monday evening's meeting is at 5:15 p.m. in the Michael "PeeWee" Walker Conference Room in the city's municpal offices at 1119 Alamo St.
