Jan. 28 Evening Newscast: Royse City High School student arrested, charged with felony gun offense

Unidentified student is accused of bringing a gun to school Friday morning.

  • Today a Royse City High School student as arrested for bringing a gun to school. The Herald Banner reports that school administrators called police around 8:30 this morning. The report did not say how school staff learned that a student had brought a gun. Police detained the student without incident while he was unarmed, officials said. The report said a backpack belonging to the student was found in a school office and that the backpack did contain a gun. The student has been charged with possession of firearm in a prohibited place, a third-degree felony. No identifying or other information about the student has been released and an investigation is ongoing.
  • There’s good news today for anyone who might be on Interstate 30 this weekend. Some scheduled work along the road has been postponed and there will be no lane closures this weekend on I-30. The Texas Department of Transportation published this updated information today.
  • In the upcoming party primary elections, Texas House District 1 Republican voters will find another familiar name on ballots. Former state representative George Lavender has announced his intention to run for the Republican nomination. The Texarkana businessman represented District 1 in the Texas House from 2011-15. Lavender will face incumbent State Representative Gary VanDeaver of New Boston and Ray Null of Paris in the primary election on March 1. Monday is the last day to register to vote in the primaries.
