Region braces for another round of ice
In Paris, Lamar Avenue Church of Christ will be open as a warming center Thursday night.
With some ice already on area roadways, and more ice on the way, many public agencies and schools across Northeast Texas have announced schedule changes and closures affecting operations Wednesday and Thursday. Some schools announced early Wednesday closures, but chose to wait before deciding about Thursday.
As of midday Wednesday, Rockwall, Collin, Fannin and Lamar counties were under a National Weather Service Winter Storm Warning until 6 p.m. Thursday. Elsewhere, Hunt, Delta, Hopkins and Wood counties were under a Winter Weather Advisory until 12 p.m. Thursday.
Throughout much of the region, ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch are likely with locally higher amounts possible, according to NWS forecasters. Sleet accumulations up to one-quarter inch are likely, forecaster said. Road conditions are expected to deteriorate Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
In Paris, the Lamar Avenue Church of Christ, 3535 Lamar Ave., will be opening its overnight warming center beginning tonight and continuing through noon Thursday.
A winter storm warning is in effect with freezing rain, sleet and ice accumulations expected with below freezing temperatures.
Those needing a warm, safe place to stay are welcome to come to the warming center. Food will also be provided.
The following is a partial list of closures or schedule changes around the area.
The Hunt County Voter Administration office will close Wednesday at 2 p.m. and will open Thursday at 10 a.m. Voting will also be suspended between 2 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. Thursday.
Commerce City Hall will close at 2 p.m. Wednesday and re-open Friday at 8 a.m.
Texas A&M University-Commerce will close the main campus and the Dallas campus at noon Wednesday, remain closed Thursday, and re-open Friday at 8 a.m.
Commerce ISD will release students at 2 p.m. Wednesday and will be closed Thursday.
Greenville ISD will release students at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
In Greenville, trash pickup has been suspended until Friday.
The Hopkins County Voter Administration office will close Wednesday at 2 p.m. and will open Thursday at 10 a.m. Voting will also be suspended between 2 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. Thursday.
Sulphur Springs ISD will release students at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Cumby ISD will release students at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Delta County Hope House's goods distribution has been cancelled for Thursday and will resume March 3.
Paris Junior College, including its Greenville and Sulphur Springs campuses, will close at noon Wednesday, remain closed Thursday, and re-open Friday at 8 a.m.
Chisum ISD will release students at 1 p.m. today.
Farmersville ISD will release students at 12:30 p.m. today and will be closed Thursday.
Royse City ISD will be closed Thursday.
