In the downtown area, Washington Street, the Farmers Market, and the plaza between Main Street and Alamo Street are all being considered for improvements.

The city government is seeking public input on what a future downtown Commerce could look like.

Commerce City manager Howdy Lisenbee discusses the City of Commerce's recent public forum seeking input for planning the future of downtown Commerce.

Some highlights:

  • Washington Street, the north-south street running along the west side of downtown, is an object of focus. Options include making the sidewalk more easily accessible from the street level and converting the short block of Washington Street between Main Street and Bonham Alley into a one-way street for northbound traffic.
  • The Farmers Market on Bonham Alley could be improved with a new parking lot, a larger pavilion, and adjacent park, and other guest-friendly features.
  • The plaza between Main Street and Alamo Street, currently a grassy lawn, could be improved with a pavilion, a water feature, a stage for performances, or other improvements.
  • The city has contracted with Fort Worth-based Freese and Nichols to conduct an ongoing study leading to a plan.
  • The city is in an information-gathering phase with its efforts, with public input welcomed on an ongoing basis.
