Newscast transcript, 5:18 p.m., May 7

In Hopkins County, there was a bit of mayhem on the Sulphur Springs town square this morning. Before it was all over, a car crashed into a light pole and two teenagers were arrested.

The Sulphur Springs News-Telegram reports that local police say they tried to pull over a black Hyundai sedan for a traffic violation on College Street at 8:39 a.m. Officials say the car then attempted to evade police and drove toward the square. Witnesses told the News-Telegram that the car’s passenger door was open as it entered the square and then crashed into a light pole and planter box at the corner of College Street and Oak Avenue. Three people fled the car, but police apprehended all three. Sulphur Springs police said that two of the three were booked into jail.

Both of those jailed are 17 years old. Keaton Pierce Wilkerson was charged with evading arrest in a vehicle and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Qieshon Odell Flecker was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle from an outstanding warrant. Neither are bond eligible. Law enforcement officials said that the Hyundai had been stolen from a local residence earlier this morning. Officials also said that an investigation led officers to recover another stolen vehicle as well as some items that had been stolen from vehicles in Sulphur Springs earlier this week.
