Big Event Tomorrow

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – The Big Event is on for tomorrow all over Commerce. It is the 6th year of the event which seeks to improve Commerce, according to event co-chair, Paul Zelhart.

ZELHART: This is our sixth year. It is a day of work and celebration in which we improve facilities, appearance, and safety in the community.

A tag day is planned by the Commerce Humane Association at the Northeast Texas Children's museum, an eye clinic will be hosted by the Lions club at AC Williams Elementary, the Louise Drake Garden Club, Delphinium Club, and National Junior Honor Society will be planting flowers throughout Commerce, and several fraternities and sororities will be cleaning up around the A&M-Commerce campus. There are two big activities the public should be aware of, according to Zelhart. One is an opportunity to dispose of certain waste.

ZELHART: There's a disposal of environmentally sensitive materials, so you can get rid of your tires and other kinds of waste that is difficult to get rid of.

Also, the Commerce Fire Department will be installing free smoke alarms into the homes of anyone who needs them, as well as replacing batteries if needed.

Five authors will be honored at Author's Park next to the city Library. A free stew lunch for all the workers is sponsored by the Masonic Lodge in the City park, with live music by the band Doctor, Doctor . Show up at the city Park tomorrow morning if you'd like to donate your time to the Big Event.
