An armed robbery at a Commerce Dollar store  Wednesday night ended when city police shot the suspect as he was leaving.

Commerce Police Chief Kerry Crews said this morning that police answered a 9-1-1 call from the Dollar General store on Culver Street around 9 p.m. last night. The city police department, backed up by Texas A&M University-Commerce police, waited outside the store.

Crews said an armed man came out behind a woman who works for the store, raised a pistol toward officers, and was then shot. He also said police are unsure whether the woman was a hostage or had some connection with the suspect.

Police are not releasing names yet of either the officer involved in the shooting or the suspect. Crews said the man was taken to the hospital in Greenville and then to Dallas, where he had surgery last night.

Crews also said the man shot last night is believed to be behind the armed robbery Tuesday night at a business on Monroe Street. He is not a suspect in a pair of other recent armed robberies , though Crews said the department has a suspect it is investigating in those crimes.

No one but the armed man was injured in last night’s shooting. The store was open for business again this morning.
