Mayor Scotty Stegall tells The Cooper Review's Cindy Roller that Noble Pest will administer the product throughout the city beginning next Tuesday, Sept. 18 and do so again two weeks later on Oct. 2.
Delta County is one of a small number of local counties yet to have a confirmed human case of the West Nile virus.
“We just want to be proactive and hope to head off that if possible,” Stegall said.
Spraying generally occurs on at least a two week rotation, since that's how long it takes for mosquito larvae to hatch.
Cooper joins the City of Bonham to have recently enacted mosquito spraying amid one of the worst years for West Nile in the country, notably North Texas, where the death toll from the virus reached 27 Thursday. Cities like Commerce, Greenville and Paris have been spraying for mosquitoes most of the summer.
The lone death locally occurred in Lamar County in August.
