Drought conditions in Texas have gotten worse over the past week. The latest report from the Texas Water Development Board found that rainfall deficits as high as 50 percent off normal over the past two months have left more than a third of Texas in some stage of drought.

Thirty-eight percent of Texas and all of the northeastern quarter of the state are in stages of drought ranging from abnormally dry to severe. While most counties are considered abnormally dry, 8 percent of the state is officially in drought.

Most of that 8 percent comes from right here in Northeast Texas. From Grayson to Lamar and down to Kaufman counties, this sector of the state is in the same condition it’s been for the past several weeks. Counties in the region are in stages of drought ranging from moderate to severe.

Heavy rains are expected overnight tonight and into Wednesday. The water Development Board said the storms could bring some relief, but it’s not expected to be much.
