Early Hunt County Settlers Favored Raising Livestock Over Farming

Texas A&M Agrilife

Carol Taylor, chairman of the Hunt County Historical Commission, says the raising of livestock was the major occupation of people in early Hunt County, rather than farming.  Not until the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s could farmers easily transport crops, including cotton, to markets.  Carol says sheep were as numerous as cattle and horses.

John Mark Dempsey is the host of the public interest program The Blacklands Café from KETR News. Dempsey is also the play-by-play announcer for Commerce Tigers Football on 88.9 FM and on ketr.org.
