F.H. "Bub" McDowell dies

Commerce – Former A&M-Commerce University President Bub McDowell has died in his home after a short illness. He was 93.

McDowell was the 7th president of the university, then known as East Texas State, and his career at the University spanned 45 years. He was born in Paris, Texas in 1913, and was immediately hired after earning his Bachelor's at East Texas State College.

McDowell served the community as well as the university throughout his distinguished career. He was twice named Commerce's Citizen of the Year and served with numerous civic boards and organizations.

Funeral services will be Monday at 10am at the First United Methodist Church of Commerce, with burial following at Rosemound Cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 8pm Sunday at Jones-Walker and Son Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the F.H. and Martha Jo McDowell Scholarship Fund at A&M-Commerce or to the First Christian Church of Commerce.
