Cooper Lake State Park officials are gearing up of a fresh start to 2016 with the annual first hike on Friday, New Year’s Day starting at 9:30 a.m. at the South Sulphur Park Unit. Park Officer Jim Beach says the event is free with the $5 park entry fee.

“We will be sticking to the main roads where it is dry,” said Jim Beach. This year they will also be offering a biking event on Saturday, Jan. 2 starting at 10 a.m. which participants can ride for 3-4 miles in the park.

He is excited to host the event which promotes not only “life outside” but also starting 2016 on a healthy foot.

“We should have nice day tomorrow for the hike,” said Officer Beach.

He would like visitors to be aware of the flooding all the Cooper Lake parks have recently endured. The Night Sky Viewing Program has been canceled. He encourages visitors to call before making plans as many events are weather permitting.

Fishing from the shoreline is permitted but the fishing docks and shelters are not available at the moment awaiting the water to recede and repairs to be made.

Camping is available at the Brightstar Loop of the South Sulphur Unit.
