Gov. Greg Abbott says Nov. 6 is the day for a special election to fill the seat left vacant by Republican State Rep. Larry Phillips. That's the same day voters will head to the polls to cast ballots in state and congressional races.
The Texas Tribune reported that the date is the earliest Abbott could schedule the special election without deeming it an emergency.
Until Monday, Phillips represented House District 62, based in Sherman. He also chaired the House Insurance Committee.
Phillips announced last year that he would not seek reelection this year. He’s instead running for district judge in Grayson County. His resignation from the Texas House became effective Monday morning. The winner of the special election will serve the final two months of Phillips’ term.
