Ricky Smith, Delta County Sheriff, was recently awarded the Home Town Hero award presented by Modern Woodmen of America. The presentation, given by Diane Stegall, took place at the Cotton Harvest Festival. Sheriff Smith was selected for this award for his many years of service to the public.
He has volunteered his time to write grants for the sheriff’s department to get safety equipment, secured resources from entities, helped with projects around the community through the inmate work crew program and supported the Delta Hope House.
Sheriff Smith retired from the Department of Public Safety as a major and enjoyed restoring old tractors for a short time before running for sheriff five years ago. He is married to Patricia Smith and they have two daughters and two grandchildren.
