A Sulphur Springs man is facing animal cruelty charges following the seizure of more than 160 cattle from two Hopkins County properties.
County sheriffs took 61 year-old George Bergin into custody Monday. According to the SPCA of Texas, between 200 and 400 cattle on six properties owned by Bergin were badly malnourished and did not have access to adequate food and water. On Tuesday, authorities say they also found three dead cattle on the properties and several skeletal remains.
The seized animals were taken to an undisclosed location for treatment. Bergin faces two years in prison and a $10,00 fine.
