Hunt County Holds Off on Federal Inmate Deal

Hunt County Commissioners are holding off on a proposal that would involve housing more federal prisoners at the Hunt County Detention Center. That’s because the Sheriff’s Office has some concerns with the deal.

While no one in the sheriff’s office would elaborate on their concerns, the Herald Banner reported that the deal involves per diems paid to the county and to the Summerill Group. Summerill specializes in negotiating higher per diem rates for local jails housing federal prisoners.

The county gets $43 per day to house each federal inmate. Summerill said it should be more like $55 a day.

The matter is set for discussion again on May 22.
